A common mood disorder that affects daily activities, thoughts, and feelings¹.
It is caused by a combination of biological, environmental, and psychological components.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS
DIAGNOSIS
This disorder is diagnosed through a mental health evaluation conducted by a trained mental health care provider (i.e. psychiatrist, psychologist, clinical social worker, etc).
It is typically diagnosed by late adolescence to early adulthood, but can occur at any age.
No blood tests are necessary for diagnosis.
TREATMENTS
Medication- Antidepressants are typically prescribed. Side effects and overall efficacy are often monitored by patient reported symptoms.
Psychotherapy- In combination with medication, talking with a therapist is beneficial for treatment.
Physical Activity- Being active, especially outdoor activity, is recommended to help boost serotonin naturally and encourage positive endorphins.
Brain Stimulation Therapy- Electroconvulsive therapy is occasionally recommended for those with severe depression.
